Preserving the Intellectual Legacy of Dr. P.J. Thomas — A New IDAF Project in Collaboration with His Family
The Indic Digital Archive Foundation (IDAF) is happy to announce an important new step in its efforts to preserve India’s intellectual and documentary heritage. The grandchildren of the distinguished economist and public intellectual Dr. P.J. Thomas (Parakunnel) have now agreed to collaborate with IDAF to digitize and preserve his scholarly works and related archival materials.
Dr. P.J. Thomas was among the early Indian economists who contributed significantly to debates on colonial trade, agrarian distress, development policy, and economic planning. His academic writings, public service, and intellectual interventions form an important part of India’s economic thought in the first half of the twentieth century. However, much of his work today remains scattered across personal collections, rare publications, and archival repositories, making access difficult for researchers and the wider public.
As part of this collaboration, members of Dr. Thomas’s family have already handed over a few original works to IDAF for digitization. These materials will be carefully processed using archival-grade digitization standards to ensure both long-term preservation and wider access. Once digitized, the documents will be made available through Granthappura, enabling scholars, students, and interested readers to engage with his contributions more easily.
This initiative reflects IDAF’s broader mission to work with families, institutions, and communities to safeguard valuable intellectual legacies that are at risk of being lost. By combining technical expertise in digitization with a commitment to open knowledge, IDAF aims to ensure that such important historical resources remain accessible for future generations.
